Healthy Smiles Start at Home
A great smile starts with great habits! Beyond visits to our office, daily oral care is key to keeping your child’s teeth strong and healthy. From brushing tips to cavity prevention, we’re here to help parents and kids build a foundation for lifelong oral health.

Brushing & Flossing Tips for Different Ages
Good habits start early, and teaching kids proper brushing and flossing techniques can make all the difference in their oral health.
- Infants & Toddlers: Even before teeth emerge, gently wipe gums with a soft cloth. Once the first tooth appears, use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush with a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
- Preschoolers & Young Kids: Encourage independence by letting them brush first, then follow up to ensure all surfaces are cleaned. Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
- Older Kids & Preteens: Teach them to brush for two minutes, twice a day, and floss daily. Supervision may be needed until they develop strong brushing skills.
Cavity Prevention & Nutrition
Diet plays a huge role in dental health! Here are some ways to protect your child’s teeth:
- Limit Sugary Snacks & Drinks: Frequent sugar exposure leads to cavities. Encourage water over juice and offer fresh fruits instead of sticky candies.
- Choose Tooth-Friendly Snacks: Cheese, yogurt, nuts, and crunchy vegetables help strengthen teeth and fight decay.
- Regular Fluoride Exposure: Fluoride strengthens enamel, making it more resistant to cavities. Use fluoride toothpaste and ask us about in-office treatments.
Teething & Early Childhood Oral Care
The teething process can be uncomfortable, but proper care can make it easier for both babies and parents.
- Teething Relief: Chilled (not frozen) teething rings, a gentle gum massage, and safe teething toys can provide comfort.
- Baby’s First Dental Visit: The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first visit by age one or when the first tooth appears.
- Preventing Early Cavities: Avoid putting a baby to bed with a bottle, and clean their gums and emerging teeth daily.
When to Expect Dental Milestones
Children’s teeth develop in stages, and knowing what to expect can help parents stay ahead of oral health concerns.
- First Teeth (6-12 months): Baby teeth start appearing, usually beginning with the lower front teeth.
- Full Set of Primary Teeth (By Age 3): By this time, most kids have a full set of 20 baby teeth.
- First Permanent Molars & Incisors (6-7 years): Adult teeth start emerging, and baby teeth begin to loosen and fall out.
- Full Set of Adult Teeth (By Early Teens): By around age 13, most permanent teeth (except wisdom teeth) are in place.
The Importance of Routine Checkups
Regular dental visits are just as important as at-home care. Here’s why:
- Early Detection of Issues: Routine exams help catch problems like cavities or misalignment early, before they require extensive treatment.
- Professional Cleanings: Even with good brushing habits, plaque can build up in hard-to-reach places—our cleanings remove it before it turns into tartar.
- Personalized Preventative Care: Our team provides fluoride treatments, sealants, and guidance to support your child’s specific dental needs.
